Horsemeat is legal to eat in South Africa – but does that make it any worse than other meat?

Following the recent horsemeat debacles in the UK, it’s worth noting that eating horse meat is legal in South Africa.

A short report on EWN states that “it is legal in South Africa to mix horsemeat with other products as long as it is clearly stipulated on the packaging.”

Spokesperson from the Department of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries Thembile Sanabe said it was normal in some cultures to consume horsemeat in South Africa and that “the regulation of horse slaughtering is done by our department under the Meat Safety Act and we have a special license for it.”

While obviously this doesn’t affect vegetarians or vegans, perhaps some meat-eaters may find this motivates them to move to a plant-based diet?

The real question though, is why horse is considered more objectionable to eat than a cow, a chicken or any other animal?

What do you think?
