Ou Meul Bakkery: Some vegetarian options 09/09/12
There's a new lunch spot in the Cape Town CBD featuring Riviersonderend's famous pies. Not a lot on offer for veggies, but still worth a look.
It’s always an exciting moment when a new lunch spot appears in the CBD. Ou Meul Bakkery opened on 14 Long street in September – bringing the renowned Riviersonderend pies right to Cape Town.
For those who aren’t familier with these pies, they are a must-have on any trip along the N2 that takes you through Riviersonderend. The original home of the Ou Meul bakery dates back to the 1980s. As a vegetarian you can probably only look forward to spinach and feta. Vegans will probably be best giving this one a skip.
There is not a lot on the menu that is vegetarian-friendly. In fact, as can be excepted from a place that specialises in pies, it’s a very meat-dominated menu. But they do stock spinach and feta pies, quinoa salad, panzanella salad as well as two vegetarian sandwiches: one with pesto, avo and tomato and another featuring pesto, mozarella and tomato. These are not the most creative options, but are made with a variety of tasty breads and are very tasty and great value for their current price – R27.00. Their spinach and feta pie goes for R16.50.
You can also buy breads at the bakery including ciabatta, rye and baguettes. They sell a variety of sweet pastries and some tasty looking preserves and goodies in store.
It’s a contemporary and light space and is definitely an option for either a takeaway or sit down meal.
