Table Thirteen in Green Point, Cape Town is the kind of restaurant or coffee shop I would want to have if I were a restaurant owner.

As a business reliant on bums on seat, one of the key components for success is location, location, location. I remember that when Table Thirteen opened in a little side road in Green Point, out of sight of main foot traffic, I wasn’t very hopeful that they would make it.

I’m thrilled that I was proven wrong. Table Thirteen has gone from strength to strength and is such a popular spot that all the tables are packed every lunch time.

The décor is modern and elegant without being stuffy or pretentious. The staff is friendly, warm, personable and welcoming. The food is exquisite. In addition to their standard menu, their deli displays a variety of food and every day holds new, mouth-watering surprises. These dishes reflect a real passion for food. And I suspect it is this passion, which is so clearly reflected in all Table Thirteen’s products, which contributes to the success of the establishment. The food is so fresh that even the bread for the sandwiches is freshly baked every day!

Although Table Thirteen does serve meat, vegans and vegetarians are spoilt for choice, with the highlight for any vegan being Burger Wednesday. Vegans will rejoice in the wonderful handmade vegan patties available on the menu which differ from week to week.

Even better, Lara O’Sullivan (the owner) and her team won’t bat an eye lid if a vegan or vegetarian asks to be accommodated.

When I let them know that I would be bringing a first time vegan to lunch, Table Thirteen went all out to make the meal special. The deli held virtually only vegan foods, and a special vegan rice pudding with coconut milk and mango was prepared and served.

Sadly, my friend could not make it. So I took a non-vegan colleague along who had the vegan burger and the rice pudding and she was sold.

Table Thirteen is summed up by: quality, elegance, fresh food, passion and warmth. This is a business which clearly understands and respects the fact that no one customer is the same. For that they have my business, my loyalty and my recommendation.

[Update: Ed’s note: I recently popped in to try the food myself. And while at first I was informed that there were no vegan burgers, the chef quickly whipped up a delicious potatoey burger with a spicy tomato sauce, hummus, cucumber and lettuce and a side salad of tasty roasted veg. Definitely worth checking out.
