Popular restaurant Balducci at the V&A Waterfront has launched an extensive and interesting all-vegan menu

Over the last eight years, veganism has gained significant traction in Cape Town. When Veggie Bunch first began hosting supper clubs, many restaurants weren’t at all aware of what vegan cooking actually meant, let alone whether the wines on the menu were vegan. Today, there are a number of 100% vegan restaurants open in the city bowl and many restaurants have added at least a few vegan items to their menus.

The fact that Balducci, a popular restaurant at the Waterfront, has launched an extensive, standalone vegan menu with more than 60 options, shows just how widespread plant-based eating is becoming.

Ian Halfon, co-owner of Balducci, recently hosted an event to introduce the menu and share his personal interest in healthy and plant-based eating. The restaurant is committed to “doing good” where they can, and not just in the kitchen. They’ve joined the no plastic straw movement, use recycled paper for all menus, and are phasing out the use of all disposable plastics in the restaurant. They’ve also partnered with Tygerberg Hospital to increase corneal transplants as part of their CSI initiatives.

The menu is impressive – with everything from smoothies and superfood bowls to soups, wraps, nachos, curry, pasta, sushi, pizza and burgers. As a long-time vegetarian, I often joke that eating out is easier for me as I just need to scan the menu for the one or two veggie options and pick one. This menu requires some serious decision making as there’s such a wide variety to choose from.

Trader Joe pizza – seriously delicious. Features peppers, red onion and mushrooms topped with vegan dairy-free cheese, vegan parmesan and vegan pesto.

Lovely fresh juices. Enjoyed the Sherbet Lemon Aide the most (pineapple, apple, mint, lemon and a hint of ginger).

There are two burgers on the menu – Cauliflower & Hemp and Smokey Black Bean (pictured). Served with sweet potato fries.

Loved the spicy Red Thai Curry with mushroom, tofu, bamboo shoots, cauliflower and broccoli. Served with basmati.

Falafel and Tahini starter served with freshly made tahini. Very tasty. Best enjoyed as soon as they arrive on the table.

Chia Parfait with coconut yoghurt, coconut cream, fresh strawberries and chia seeds. Could totally eat this for breakfast.

The vegan menu is surprisingly varied. There is a large selection and a wide variety of cuisines to suit all tastes.
