What is it about living in a place that stops us from acting like tourists?

Having lived in Cape Town for around 7 years, and despite growing up in the Western Cape, there are a couple of tourist staples that I’ve never sampled. For example, I’ve still never been up or down the cable car onto Table Mountain!

That’s why I said “Yes, please!” when I received an invitation to review the Waterfront Charters Cruise and Dine experience.

What is the Waterfront Cruise and Dine experience?
Ever feel like a quick jaunt out to sea in a sailboat before dinner? Well, unless you’ve got your very own Seas the Day or It’s About Time moored in the harbour, then this is the next best thing.

The Waterfront Cruise and Dine experience combines a Waterfront Charters cruise with lunch or dinner at a choice of three of the V&A’s popular restaurants: Meloncino, Greek Fisherman and City Grill for a set price.

At time of writing, a cruise and lunch costs R325 and a sunset cruise followed by dinner costs R629. Book online or at the booking office at Quay Five.

What to expect on the cruise

I first went on a Waterfront Charters Cruise a few years ago when a friend bought a trip as a gift for my husband and I. We were both surprised at how fun (and romantic) it was.  That’s why I didn’t hesitate when I received the invitation to review the dinner experience. Even more so because this time the cruise wouldn’t be on a cold and blustery winter’s afternoon, instead I booked it slap bang in the middle of the December holidays.

Ideal for date night or a girl’s night out

I invited a good friend to join me for the Sunset Champagne Cruise on the Serenity One – and we had a blast. Sitting out front while the catamaran heads out of the harbour, offers stunning and unusual views of Table Mountain, Signal Hill, the Cape Town Stadium and Mouille Point.

Once you’re out of the harbour, the sails go up and you can enjoy whatever direction the wind happens to take the catamaran. If you’re not used to the ocean like me, I found this an enjoyably exhilarating experience – plus it’s safe enough for kids to join.

On board, expect a festive atmosphere and complimentary bubbly, sipped along to classic 80s hits. The cruise lasts for about 90 minutes until the sun just sinks below the horizon.

The dinner experience

We opted for the set menu at Meloncino. The set menu has vegetarian options, but if you are vegan they are happy to cater to your needs, just be sure to phone ahead or confirm via email when you book to make sure they’re prepared.

If you’re a mixed group, including non-vegetarians like we were, the set menu will have something for everyone.

The portions are extremely generous and I didn’t manage to finish my mains or desserts.

The service we experienced was top notch and the team was very accommodating to our requests – we were spoiled by the staff that’s for sure!
